Risk / Value Matrix I have covered this in the past and I wanted to go back over the idea again. Some riders who I am working with specifically at the moment need to hear this. A post from @michael.szymandera.pl was only meant to be a funny one, but it kicked off some great discussion about risk when training. You would be amazed at the VAST range of risk that riders take. Whilst coaching I see the full range. Some riders take way too much risk and others don't take any where near enough. Those who take too much seem to be largely, but not limited to 2 main reasons 1. They are naive and aren't aware of the risk. 2. They are trying to progress too fast and take too big of a step Those who don't take enough risk, i see as mostly due to personality. They are far more risk adverse and conservative people. I occasionally see riders in this position who are very risk adverse, who then, whilst riding, approach something that really concerns them. Their emotional state of anxiety or fear, stops them thinking logically. They then decide the line they are on is too dangerous, and then they take ANY other path or line. Because in their mind this line is too dangerous, ANY other line is a better option. Then they take far more risk by riding off the best line. For all riders I think this is a good way to think about risk in terms of progressing your skills and enjoying your riding!
