There are a few variables that need to be taken into account, and they are not black and white. But I hope this helps explain the relationships and helps you make a call. There are four factors; - Your Skill, - Confidence or Belief (in application of your skills) - Reward/Value - Risk When you are very early in your riding career, you won't be able to judge these as well as someone with a lot of experience. If you have ever seen the dunning Kruger effect this really throws out your judgement early on, so very new riders should take this into account! The matrix is in the comments, and so is the Dunning Kruger Effect chart. At the end of the day if you as a rider are unsure, I always err on the side of caution, and live to ride another day. Please let me know your thoughts as this is the first time i have ever put this down "on paper".
